Early Life and Career

Wayne Gretzky was born on January 26, 1961, in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. He began playing hockey at a young age, and quickly showed a natural talent for the game. Gretzky played for several minor hockey teams before being drafted by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in 1977.

Gretzky had an incredible junior hockey career, scoring 182 goals and adding 271 assists in just 64 games during his final season with the Greyhounds. He was also named the OHL Player of the Year and the Canadian Hockey League Player of the Year.

NHL Career

Gretzky was drafted first overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut at the age of 18, and quickly became one of the most dominant players in the league. Gretzky led the Oilers to four Stanley Cups in the 1980s, and won the Hart Trophy as the NHL's Most Valuable Player eight times.

In 1988, Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings. He continued to play at a high level with the Kings, winning the Stanley Cup again in 1993. Gretzky also played for the New York Rangers and Phoenix Coyotes before retiring from the NHL in 1999.

Records and Accomplishments

Gretzky holds numerous NHL records, including most goals (894),assists (1,963),and points (2,857). He is also the only player in NHL history to score 200 points in a season, which he did four times.

Gretzky was also known for his incredible vision and passing ability. He could see the ice like no other player, and his passes were often described as "surgical". Gretzky's ability to set up his teammates for scoring chances was a major factor in his success.

Legacy
