Facial Plastic Surgery Residency

The first step to becoming a facial plastic surgeon is to complete a residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. This residency typically lasts five years and provides comprehensive training in all aspects of head and neck surgery, including facial plastic surgery.

During residency, you will rotate through different departments, including general surgery, plastic surgery, and otolaryngology. You will also participate in research and clinical trials.

Facial Plastic Surgery Fellowship

After completing a residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, you may choose to pursue a fellowship in facial plastic surgery. A fellowship provides specialized training in facial plastic surgery and prepares you for a career as a facial plastic surgeon.

Fellowships in facial plastic surgery typically last one to two years. During this time, you will receive advanced training in all aspects of facial plastic surgery, including rhinoplasty, facelift, eyelid surgery, and reconstructive surgery.

American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS)

The ABFPRS is a non-profit organization that certifies facial plastic surgeons. To become certified by the ABFPRS, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a graduate of an accredited medical school
  • Complete a residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery
  • Complete a fellowship in facial plastic surgery
  • Pass the ABFPRS board exam

The ABFPRS board exam is a rigorous exam that tests your knowledge and skills in facial plastic surgery. The exam is divided into two parts: a written exam and an oral exam.

To prepare for the ABFPRS board exam, you should study the ABFPRS content outline and attend review courses. You should also practice taking practice exams.

Board Recertification

ABFPRS certification is valid for ten years. To maintain your certification, you must complete continuing medical education (CME) credits and pass a recertification exam.

The ABFPRS recertification exam is a shorter exam than the initial board exam. It tests your knowledge and skills in facial plastic surgery and ensures that you are up-to-date on the latest advances in the field.

Benefits of Board Certification

There are many benefits to becoming a board-certified facial plastic surgeon. These benefits include:

  • Increased credibility and recognition
  • Improved patient outcomes
  • Enhanced earning potential
  • Access to continuing medical education and resources

If you are considering a career in facial plastic surgery, I encourage you to become board certified by the ABFPRS. Board certification is the gold standard for facial plastic surgery and it can help you achieve your career goals.

Facial plastic surgery is a rewarding and challenging career. If you are passionate about helping people improve their appearance and function, then facial plastic surgery may be the right career for you.

To become a facial plastic surgeon, you must complete a residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, and a fellowship in facial plastic surgery. You must also pass a board exam and maintain your certification through continuing medical education.

Board certification is the gold standard for facial plastic surgery. It demonstrates your commitment to excellence and it can help you achieve your career goals.
