Lion is a 2016 biographical drama film based on the 2013 non-fiction book A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley. The film tells the story of Brierley's separation from his family in India at the age of five and his subsequent adoption by an Australian couple.

The film was directed by Garth Davis and stars Dev Patel as Brierley, Rooney Mara as his adoptive mother, and Nicole Kidman as his adoptive aunt. Lion was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $120 million worldwide against a production budget of $12 million.

Plot

In 1986, five-year-old Saroo Brierley (Sunny Pawar) boards a train with his older brother Guddu (Abhishek Bharate) in Khandwa, India. When Guddu gets off the train to buy snacks, Saroo falls asleep and is accidentally left behind. He wakes up to find himself on a moving train, alone and scared.

Saroo spends the next few days on the train, eventually arriving in Calcutta. He is unable to speak the local language or find his way home, and he ends up living on the streets. He is eventually taken in by a group of children who live in a slum, and he learns to survive on his own.

Two years later, Saroo is adopted by an Australian couple, Sue (Nicole Kidman) and John Brierley (David Wenham). He is renamed Saroo Brierley and grows up in Tasmania with his new family.

As Saroo gets older, he begins to have flashbacks to his life in India. He remembers his family and the train station where he was left behind. He becomes determined to find his way back to them, and he uses Google Earth to search for landmarks that he remembers from his childhood.

In 2011, Saroo finally finds his hometown and his family. He is reunited with his mother and siblings, and he learns the truth about what happened to his brother Guddu.
