The expedition set out from Norway in June 1903, and arrived at Ellesmere Island in August. The expedition members spent the next year living among the Inuit, learning their language and customs. They also conducted scientific research, and made several attempts to reach the North Pole.

In April 1904, Fiala and two companions made an attempt to reach the North Pole by dogsled. However, they were forced to turn back after three weeks, due to bad weather and difficult ice conditions.

In June 1904, the expedition set out from Ellesmere Island on the ship America. The ship became trapped in the ice, and the expedition members were forced to spend the next winter on board.

In August 1905, the America was finally able to break free from the ice, and the expedition returned to Norway.

A Year Among the Ice Fields and Eskimos is a fascinating account of an Arctic expedition. The book provides a glimpse into the lives of the Inuit people, and the challenges of Arctic exploration.

About the Author

Anthony Fiala was born in New York City in 1869. He was a civil engineer and explorer. In 1898, he was appointed as the leader of the Ziegler Polar Expedition.

Fiala died in 1950. He is remembered as one of the great Arctic explorers of the early 20th century.

The Ziegler Polar Expedition

The Ziegler Polar Expedition was a privately funded expedition to the Arctic. The expedition was led by Anthony Fiala, and set out from Norway in June 1903.

The expedition's goal was to reach the North Pole. However, the expedition became trapped in the ice, and the members were forced to spend the next two winters on board the ship America.

In August 1905, the America was finally able to break free from the ice, and the expedition returned to Norway.

The Inuit People
