The expedition sailed to the Pacific Ocean, visiting numerous islands and coastlines before returning in 1860.

Later in life, Dana continued to write and published several other works, including "The Seaman's Manual" (1841),"To Cuba and Back" (1859),and "Under the Southern Cross" (1877). He also served as a law clerk, U.S. commissioner, and special correspondent during the American Civil War.
