In the summer of 2018, I spent five months on foot with an Arctic caribou herd. It was an incredible experience that changed my life in many ways. I learned about the importance of community, resilience, and the power of nature.

The Journey

I joined the herd in northern Alaska, near the Arctic Circle. The herd was made up of about 100,000 caribou, and they were on their annual migration to their calving grounds in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. I walked with the herd for over 1,000 miles, and I saw some of the most beautiful and remote country in the world. We crossed rivers, mountains, and glaciers, and we saw a variety of wildlife, including bears, wolves, and moose. It was an incredible journey, and I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to experience it.

The Caribou

Caribou are amazing animals. They are incredibly strong and resilient, and they are able to survive in some of the harshest conditions on Earth. They are also very social animals, and they live in large herds. I learned a lot about caribou during my time with the herd, and I came to have a deep respect for them.

The People

I also met some amazing people during my time with the herd. I met scientists who were studying the caribou, and I met Inupiat Eskimos who have lived in the Arctic for generations. I learned a lot from these people, and I am grateful for their hospitality and their friendship.

The Impact

My time with the caribou herd had a profound impact on me. I learned the importance of community, resilience, and the power of nature. I also learned a lot about myself, and I came back from the experience a changed person. I am so grateful for the opportunity to have spent five months on foot with an Arctic caribou herd. It was an experience that I will never forget.

If you are looking for an adventure, I highly recommend spending time with an Arctic caribou herd. It is an experience that will change your life.
